BOISE CAMERA CLUB ANNOUNCES 90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Boise Camera Club (BCC), a non-profit organization founded in 1934, is the longest-running camera club in Idaho. To celebrate its 90th year, the club is inviting its members, guests, and interested members of the public to attend a banquet and special program at the Riverside Hotel in Garden City on Thursday, March 28, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Advance reservations are required.
The club will feature two keynote speakers for the evening program: Don Johnson, award-winning fine art, portrait and architectural photographer with Arrowrock Photography in Eagle, Idaho, is a current Assistant Superintendent for the Photography Department of the Western Idaho Fair. Don will use the Boise Camera Club's “90 Years of Photographic Excellence” theme as a creative springboard to sharing thought-provoking ideas and observations in his talk, The Timeless Essence of Photographic Excellence: Past, Present and Prescient.
David duChemin, world-renowned photographer and best-selling author, will deliver a camera club exclusive pre-recorded virtual lecture, The Heart of the Photograph, developed for photography club members seeking to take their work to the next level. Beautifully illustrated by award-winning photographs taken around the world, David’s inspiring lecture explores 10 powerful ideas about the creation of more engaging photographs.
Tickets include dinner and the program and are $37.50 for members, $45 for students and $55 for non-members. The event is organized by the Boise City Department of Arts and History. WOOD AND GOURD ARTISTRY SHOW SET FOR APRIL 6-7
The Idaho Artistry in Wood 2024 Wood and Gourd Art Show will be held Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 at the 5th floor exhibition hall of JUMP (Jack's Urban Meeting Place) 1000 W. Myrtle Street in Boise. Show hours on Saturday are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and on Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. The annual show attracts up to 400 works of art and 1500 spectators.
The Idaho Artistry in Wood Show provides an opportunity for artists working in wood and gourds to participate in judged competition and display their work to the public. The event will include special displays, live demonstrators, sale of wood and gourd art objects, raffles, auctions and a banquet.
The Treasure Valley is home to prominent artists whose work in wood has won prizes in national and world competitions. The show will include woodcarving, woodturning, woodburning, scrolling, fine woodworking, marquetry, gourds and intarsia. Tools and materials used in creating wood art and the work of local artists will also be available for sale at the show.
Admission to the show is $5. For youth 12 and under, the show is free. The cost of entering work in the show is free for the first five entries and $5 for each additional piece if registered in advance or $10 per piece at registration, which will take place Friday, April 5, 1-6 p.m. at the show site. BCT ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FOR BIPOC PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL
Boise Contemporary Theater is now accepting submissions for its fourth annual BIPOC Playwrights Festival, tentatively scheduled for August 15-24. The festival seeks to champion emerging and mid-career playwrights from marginalized communities by connecting exceptional works with professional actors, directors, and technicians.
2024 also marks the launch of the Young Playwrights Initiative, which will select one unproduced work by a writer between 18 and 25 years old for inclusion in the lineup.
Past BIPOC Festival Playwrights include Juan Jose Alfonso, Stephanie Kyung Sun Walters, Debra Ann Byrd, Jeanne Sakata, Vinecia Coleman, Jason Tseng, Novid Parsi, LaDarrion Williams, and Herb Newsome.
BCT has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award of $25,000 to support BCT’s 4th Annual BIPOC Playwrights Festival.
Writers will have four to five days of rehearsal to workshop their piece with a director and cast, followed by two staged readings of their work on the BCT MainStage.
Travel, lodging, and a $1,000 artist stipend will be provided.
